All Things D Transcript: Evan and Biz Talk Commercial Twitter Accounts and Authentication

by Steve Broback on June 1, 2009

In the piece “Open for Business,” The Wall Street Journal features an interview with Evan Williams and Biz Stone held last week at the All Things D conference.

Bottom line? “Commercial accounts” appear to be a likely source of revenue for our favorite microblogging service.

MR. MOSSBERG:Like a Starbucks pretending to be Dunkin’ Donuts. So the first thing is you have some way for Dunkin’ Donuts to establish it’s really them?

MR. WILLIAMS:A service we could offer as the middleman.

MR. MOSSBERG:Some sort of authentication.

MR. WILLIAMS:Say yes, this is Dunkin’ Donuts. We check them out. It’s something that will take us manual effort to do and a little time, so we’ll probably want to charge money for that.

Another thing is, because organizations’ Twitter accounts are different than individual Twitter accounts, what’s really important is authenticity. So a lot of companies, you want to know who is actually doing this. Is it someone in PR, is it the local Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee? Who is behind this Twitter account? So maybe that’s something we reveal. That’s helpful to you, it’s helpful for them, and it establishes more authenticity.
